INTRO
The Detroit Pistons are an iconic basketball franchise. They are one of only eight NBA franchises to win three or more World Championships, and are the only team to win a championship without having a player named to the NBA’s top 75 players of all time. From the Bad Boys of the 80’s, to the ‘Goin to Work Pistons’ of the early 2000’s, they are known for their physical, hard-nosed brand of basketball, and they are also my hometown team.
For a franchise named after an automobile engine component that hails from the Motor City, a brand image that resembles or pays homage to the automotive industry is noticeably absent. I don’t dislike anything about the current Pistons brand, it just doesn’t feel like Detroit, or at least uniquely Detroit. For this passion project rebrand, I drew inspiration from the team’s history, the city’s history, and from the iconic automobiles that helped put Detroit on the map.
